Hylonomus (hai-LON-oh-muss) is considered by many paleontologists to be the first official reptile! It lived during the Late Carboniferous era, approximately 314 million years ago. It was a small animal, around 20 centimeters in length. It was one of the first animals to produce amniotic eggs, making it one of our (very distant) ancestors, too!
